Since the formation of Massillon Main Street in 1988, there has been tremendous improvement in Downtown Massillon. The vacancy rate for downtown storefronts has gone from 50 per cent down to about 8 per cent. Building ownership in downtown Massillon has changed from out-of-town owners, where in some cases buildings were owned by several estates, to local investors who now own most of the downtown buildings. Building values and rents have increased to the point that it is now difficult to find space for new small businesses in downtown Massillon. Massillon Main Street needs to expand its program to include revitalization of second and third floors in the downtown area. We also need to expand the area to include the surrounding downtown blocks.

Main Street's guiding philosophy since 1988, and key to its continued success, is a strong adherence to the National Main Street Program for Downtown Revitalization. There are four basic points to this program

(1) ORGANIZATION
Main Street works closely with the City,
Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Massillon
Association. and other organizations.

(2) ECONOMIC RESTRUCTURING
Utilizing the great demographics of Massillon's
central business area to recruit new businesses that
can be supported by our market. Continued
development of other areas of Massillon.

(3) PROMOTION
Working with the Chamber of Commerce, City of
Massillon, Downtown Massillon Association, and
other organizations to plan special events that bring
awareness of Downtown Massillon.

(4) DESIGN
Placing emphasis on our historic buildings which gives
Massillon its unique character and individual identity.
Continue working for new pedestrian street lighting
(continued from CitiCenter), quality signage, parking lot
improvements, landscaping and maintenance of our green
spaces. Meeting with business and property owners to
discuss their buildings and signage plans and potential
financial assistance from Main Street.

Massillon Main Street's commitment (as exhibited by the strong teamwork and obvious success since 1988) has stabilized and increased property values not only in downtown but throughout the City. Massillon's rebirth can be credited to many who believed and helped with downtown redevelopment, economic development, and annexation.

Downtown Massillon needs our constant attention. There is a tremendous amount of work yet to be done in the future. Yes, Downtown Massillon is forever!
